Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light Service — Moose Jaw
How serious is it, and what will it cost?
(Minute Muffler Brake & Wheel)
We’ve been answering that question for Moose Jaw drivers since 1992 — and we answer it honestly.
We’ll tell you which one before you spend a dollar on parts.
Our Diagnostic Process — Diagnosed with a Plan
1. Scan all computer modules — we read every module on the vehicle (not just the engine), so we catch related faults in the transmission, ABS, emissions, and body control systems.
2. Check technical service bulletins (TSBs) — manufacturers issue bulletins for known issues on specific vehicles. We check yours against every TSB on file before we start guessing.
3. Test the components — we test the actual parts to make sure the problem is a physical component and not an electrical or wiring issue. A trouble code points you in a direction. It does not tell you which exact part to replace.
4. Confirm the cause — by following a defined set of steps we can tell you what is actually wrong, not just replace parts and hope. That’s what “diagnosed with a plan” means.
These procedures ensure your vehicle’s performance is as intended, as well as efficiently as possible — and that you don’t pay for parts your car didn’t need.
Common Check Engine Light Causes
- Loose or damaged gas cap — sounds silly, but it’s responsible for a surprising number of CEL diagnoses. We always check it first because we don’t want to charge you for a real diagnostic if a 30-second fix solves it.
- Failing oxygen (O2) sensor — one of the most common causes. A bad O2 sensor drops fuel economy and can damage your catalytic converter if ignored. Repair is usually $200–$450 depending on which sensor and which vehicle.
- Catalytic converter failure — Converters are the #1 miss diagnosed code on a vehicle. Failures do happen but they are always caused failures. Often caused by a long-ignored O2 sensor, MAF sensor or misfire, Coolant or Engine oil consumption. Most of the time a different problem exists that the engine computer can’t recognize. This is the expensive one — replacement can run $800 to $2,500+ depending on the vehicle. We’ll always tell you the lower-cost upstream fixes that might solve it first.
- Spark plugs and ignition coils — misfires usually trace back to these. Spark plug replacement is routine maintenance; coil replacement is usually $150–$300 per coil installed.
- Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor — causes rough idle, poor fuel economy, and stalling. Often just needs cleaning ($60–$100); occasionally needs replacement ($250–$500).
- EVAP system leak — your fuel vapor recovery system has a small leak somewhere. Common after winter. Often a simple hose or filter cleaning will fix it. Other possible causes are vent valve, purge solenoid or charcoal canister.
- EGR valve issues — sticky or carbon-fouled EGR valves trigger CELs and rough running. Cleaning is sometimes possible; replacement is $300–$500 typically.
- Transmission sensor faults — many modern transmissions throw CEL codes when sensors fail. We can diagnose these without tearing the transmission apart.
Solid Light vs Flashing Light
- Solid (steady) light — A fault has occurred. You can keep driving but your fuel economy, power and drivability will suffer. Book a diagnostic within a few days. Not an emergency, but don’t ignore it for a month.
- Flashing light — pull over safely and call us. A flashing CEL almost always means an active misfire, which can destroy your catalytic converter in a short distance. Towing is cheaper than a new converter.
What We Diagnose Beyond the Engine
- Engine and emissions systems (OBD-II)
- Transmission control modules
- ABS and traction control
- Body control modules
- Climate control systems
- Charging and starting systems
- Network communication (CAN bus) faults
- Driveability complaints with no code present (hard starts, stalls, rough idle, hesitation)

| Full diagnostic with component testing | $150 – $300 | 1 – 2 hours |
| Driveability diagnostic (no code present) | $150 – $250 | 1 – 2 hours |
| Electrical / wiring diagnostic | $150 – $600+ | 1 – 4+ hours |
Why “Just Replace the Part” Isn’t a Plan
That’s what “diagnosed with a plan” protects you from. We test before we replace. Your wallet thanks us.
